Quan Chi

The necromancer behind Scorpion's revenge.

Quan Chi is a sorcerer and necromancer and one of the series' main villains. He first appears in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero (1997), where he hires both Sub-Zero and Scorpion, hoping they will fight; Sub-Zero kills Scorpion, and Quan Chi wipes out Scorpion's Shirai Ryu clan.

Lore & Background

He revives Scorpion as an undead revenant and tells him Sub-Zero killed his clan and family. In Mortal Kombat 4 he joins the fallen Elder God Shinnok, and in Deadly Alliance (2002) he allies with Shang Tsung to raise Onaga's army and kill Liu Kang. In the 2011 reboot he turns the fallen Earthrealm heroes into revenants, and in Mortal Kombat X Scorpion beheads him on learning the truth. In Mortal Kombat 1 he begins as a miner who learns sorcery from 'Damashi' and plots with Shang Tsung and General Shao against Empress Sindel.

Reader's Guide

John Tobias created him to replace Shang Tsung as the series' main sorcerer. For Mortal Kombat X his face was modelled on Yul Brynner and blends of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff.
