Lore & Background
The first game is set on Earthrealm, where seven warriors enter the tournament with the freedom of their realm at stake against an Outworld takeover. Outworld had already won nine in a row under the sorcerer Shang Tsung, but with the thunder god Raiden's help the Earthrealm warriors win and Liu Kang becomes champion. In Mortal Kombat II Shao Kahn lures Earthrealm's warriors to Outworld for a winner-take-all rematch, which Liu Kang also wins. Later games turn more to open invasion, and in the 2011 reboot the Elder Gods empower Raiden to kill Shao Kahn for breaking the tournament's rules.
