Lore & Background
Mortal Kombat X makes him a descendant of the Great Kung Lao and cousin of Kung Lao, who by then is an undead revenant serving Shinnok. After Kung Lao's death his family moved to the United States and lived in poverty, and he became a thief until Raiden persuaded him to train with the Shaolin at the Wu Shi Academy. As a member of the White Lotus Society he fights alongside Cassie Cage's unit against Outworld and the Netherrealm. Mortal Kombat 11 mentions him in passing and makes him Kung Lao's nephew.
Reader's Guide
NetherRealm wanted both an archer and a relative of Kung Lao; his costume draws on Mongolian nomadic archers. Story director Dominic Cianciolo confirmed him as the series' first gay character, which the game hints at in a conversation with Raiden. His staff that turns into a bow was praised as a new playstyle for the series.
