Vana'diel
The world of Final Fantasy XI, made by the gods as a playground for their children.
Vana'diel is the world of Final Fantasy XI. Its climates range from northern glaciers and southern deserts to ethereal realms and floating lands. It is divided into regions made up of zones, which include outdoor areas, dungeons, cities and towns, and it has six city-states: Bastok, San d'Oria, Windurst, Jeuno, Aht Urhgan and Adoulin.
Lore & Background
In the game's creation myth, Vana'diel was a playground for the gods and their children, who were born of a vast sentient Crystal. The children built a path to paradise and were struck down for it. The goddess Altana wept five tears that became the five Enlightened Races, and Promathia, the God of Twilight, cursed them with their darkest traits and created the Beastmen to keep them fighting forever.
Reader's Guide
Players can explore the Middle Lands and the Near East, plus the near west with Seekers of Adoulin. Travel is on foot or by Chocobo, airship or special spells.
The game is set 20 years after the Crystal War, in which Bastok, San d'Oria and Windurst defeated the Shadow Lord and his Beastmen army. The original story deals with the aftermath of that war.
