The first generation Toledo (Typ 1L) was a four-door fastback saloon, technically a five-door liftback, built on the Golf Mk2 platform. It was the first SEAT developed entirely under Volkswagen Group ownership. Sales began in most of Europe in May 1991, arriving in Britain in October 1991, and it was the first SEAT sold in Sweden. A mild facelift came in September 1995. The second generation (Typ 1M) debuted at the 1998 Paris Motor Show as a four-door notchback saloon, sharing components with the Volkswagen Bora and Škoda Octavia. It abandoned the tailgate for a traditional boot opening. The third generation (Typ 5P) introduced in 2004 featured a five-door hatchback sedan design with a high roof, inspired by the original Toledo's hatchback/saloon rear, and used the Volkswagen Golf Mk5 underpinnings.
