The first-generation León (Typ 1M) launched in 1999, based on the Volkswagen Group A4 (PQ34) platform and sharing components with the Volkswagen Golf Mk4. It featured a fastback design inspired by the Alfa Romeo Alfasud, firmer suspension, and wider tyres. The dashboard was derived from the first-generation Audi A3. Engine choices included non-turbo petrol units, a 1.8-litre Turbo (132 kW), and the Cupra R with 154 kW (later 165 kW). A Cupra 4 variant offered a 2.8-litre VR6 with 150 kW and four-wheel drive via the Haldex Traction system. Diesel options included a 110 kW version. In Switzerland, Abt Sportsline produced a supercharged 'Cupra 4 Kompressor' with 206 kW. Production ended in May 2006.

The second generation (Typ 1P) began production in May 2005, sharing design cues with the SEAT Altea. It introduced a 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine (77 kW) and sportier FR variants with 2.0-litre FSI or TDI engines. The Cupra model featured a 240 PS 2.0 TFSI engine (0–100 km/h in 6.4 seconds), while the Cupra R used a 265 PS engine (0–100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, limited top speed 250 km/h). A facelift arrived in 2009. Special editions included the Copa Edition (285 PS, 55 units in Europe, 100 in Mexico), the Streetcopa (200 units for Switzerland), the World Champion Edition (200 units), and the Cupra 310 Limited Edition (310 PS, 100 units). A sole car customized by Shakira, the Cupra Pies Descalzos, was auctioned for charity.
