Niez is the capital city of Mahag Saar in Tales of Arise. When the party arrives, the ruling lord Almeidrea Kaineris is nowhere to be seen and hollow cheers of triumph echo from burned-out ruins.

Background

Enslaved by the Renans for three hundred years, the city suffered under Almeidrea's cruelty until a Dahnan named Dedyme founded the Dark Wings, named for the legend of a hero who defeated a tyrant; as the war against the Renans cost him losses, Dedyme became a cold-hearted man who would do anything to win. Almeidrea, having tested the Fruit of Helgan on Elde Menancia through Kelzalik, let the Dark Wings obtain explosives, and Dedyme's reckless bombing drove the Renans out of Niez at the cost of many Dahnan lives and most of the city.

Almeidrea escaped with her soldiers, leaving behind castle food already tainted with the Fruit of Helgan to set up a hollowing. Dedyme then set up a regime no different from the Renans', worshipped by some and feared by others such as Baephon, who leads the party to him when they find the city in ruins. A year after Almeidrea hollowed half the population, humanitarian concerns led to Renans being admitted to the vacant areas, causing tension.
