Background

Before Dohalim became Lord, Menancia's Dahnan slaves lived as miserably as those of any other realm. Dohalim's reforms required Renans to treat Dahnans with respect, allowed Dahnans to rise through the ranks and paid them a salary; most Renans welcomed the changes, but a group of conservative hardliners led by Kelzalik, backed by Lord Almeidrea Kaineris, secretly spiked the Dahnan food rations with the Fruit of Helgan, which drains its victims of astral energy and hollows them.

Migal and the Gold Dust Cats exposed the plot at the cost of Migal's life, and Dohalim's berserk breakdown gave Kelzalik's faction the chance to attempt a coup, which Alphen's group and the realm's Renans and Dahnans put down before Dohalim banished Kelzalik. Viscint, the radiant capital, is the only place where Dahnans walk freely without fear of Renan soldiers; Autelina Palace, built by slave labor, forms the center of Menancian life, and Razrum Quarry hides a forbidden medical facility. Even after Dohalim joined the party, Menancia remained a bastion of equality.
