Background

Originally Dahna's astral energy was spread so thinly through the planet that it could not become sentient. After the Great Astral Spirit of Rena came into being and consumed Rena's energy, it turned to Dahna: the Helganquil, Rena's natives, abducted most of the Dahnans who could perform potent astral artes and re-engineered them into Renans, so that arte-casting Dahnans grew rare and were persecuted, and they re-engineered native animals into zeugles.

When the first Spirit Channeling Ceremony failed three hundred years ago and the Renas Alma was destroyed, the Great Spirit decided to restore it with Dahna's own energy; the Renans were ordered to invade in the Great Conquest, most Dahnans were enslaved and the Crown Contest was enacted to drain the planet. Publicly the Contest chooses a Sovereign every ten years, but it only gathers energy to restore the Renas Alma. After around thirty Contests the land has been reshaped into the Five Realms, each housing one element: Orbus Calaglia (Fire), Cyslodia (Light), Elde Menancia (Earth), Mahag Saar (Wind) and Ganath Haros (Water).

At the end of the story Rena's astral energy is absorbed and dispersed across Dahna, merging the two into a New World, and the Five Realms are renamed.
