Balseph is an antagonist of Tales of Arise. He is the ruler of Orbus Calaglia, holder of the Fire master core and the first Renan lord encountered by Alphen.

Background

One of the Five Lords who compete in the Crown Contest to become Sovereign, Balseph rules Calaglia from Glanymede Castle, gathering astral energy by having his Dahnan slaves mine ore that he sets alight. According to Ganabelt Valkyris he competed in the past two Crown Contests and lost. He first appears furious that Shionne has stolen his master core. When the Crimson Crows attack his stronghold as a distraction, Iron Mask and Shionne sneak in to assassinate him; the battle moves to his spirit vessel, where the gathered astral energy incarnates as a Fire Avatar.

Defeated, he attempts one last strike on Shionne, and Iron Mask counters him into the Fire Avatar's grasp, where he burns to death. A brutish man who treats slaves and subordinates alike poorly, he nonetheless cares deeply about the members of his house and wishes to improve their standing. In battle he wields a giant fire-imbued axe and never uses astral artes; his mystic arte is Pyroclasm.
