Long-duration Gemini flight that hosted first crewed space rendezvous.
Gemini 7, also known as Gemini VII, was a NASA human spaceflight that took place in 1965 as part of the Gemini program. It marked the fourth crewed Gemini mission, the thirteenth crewed American spaceflight, and the twenty-first crewed spaceflight overall when counting Soviet missions and X-15 flights that crossed the Kármán line. Astronauts Frank Borman and Jim Lovell spent almost 14 days in orbit, completing 206 revolutions around Earth. Their spacecraft acted as the stationary target for the first crewed space rendezvous, which was carried out by the Gemini 6A crew.
The mission was originally scheduled to fly after Gemini 6, but that earlier flight was canceled when its Agena Target Vehicle failed during launch. Because the rendezvous objective was considered critical, NASA decided to run Gemini 6A alongside Gemini 7, using the latter as the rendezvous target. The 14-day duration forced NASA to tackle challenges of long-duration spaceflight, including waste storage—the crew practiced stuffing trash behind their seats before launch. Both astronauts synchronized their work and sleep schedules with the prime ground shift. Gemini 7 carried out twenty experiments, including studies on nutrition in space, though later Gemini missions also carried a comparable number of experiments. The astronauts also tested a lightweight G5C spacesuit, which became uncomfortable in the hot, cramped spacecraft over long periods. The mission’s highlight came on day eleven with the rendezvous with Gemini 6A. Following advice from Pete Conrad, who had spent eight days on Gemini 5, both men brought books to read. Gemini 7 held the record for the longest spaceflight until Soyuz 9 in June 1970, and remained the longest U.S. crewed flight until Skylab 2 in May–June 1973.
Launch proceeded without issues, and the Titan II rocket performed as expected. Some slight pogo vibrations began 110 seconds into launch, but unlike Gemini 5, where astronauts experienced vision and speech problems, Borman felt only a light shaking, and Lovell felt nothing.
