Gemini 5, officially designated Gemini V, was a NASA crewed spaceflight that launched on August 21, 1965, as part of Project Gemini. It marked the third crewed mission in the Gemini program, the eleventh American crewed spaceflight (counting two X-15 flights that exceeded 100 kilometers), and the nineteenth human spaceflight overall. On August 26, 1965, it became the first American crewed mission to set the world record for spaceflight duration, surpassing the previous record held by the Soviet Union's Vostok 5 from 1963. The mission might have lasted one day longer, but it was cut short primarily due to a failing fuel cell, with a developing tropical storm (later named Betsy) also influencing the decision—though the storm was not yet a hurricane at the time.

The crew consisted of Command Pilot Gordon Cooper, a Mercury veteran who became the first person to fly two Earth orbital missions, and Pilot Pete Conrad. Their backup crew was also assigned, and the support crew included Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin as Houston CAPCOM, Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom as Cape CAPCOM, and James A. McDivitt as Houston CAPCOM. Aldrin contributed his doctoral work on orbital rendezvous techniques to the program, but the phantom rendezvous procedure used on Gemini 5 was developed by mission planners.

On August 21, 1965, at 16:07:15 UTC, the Rendezvous Evaluation Pod (REP) sub-satellite was released into orbit from the spacecraft.

The mission's main objective was to double the U.S. spaceflight record to eight days—the time needed to fly to the Moon, land, and return. This was made possible by new fuel cells that generated enough electricity for longer missions, a key innovation for future Apollo flights, replacing the chemical batteries used on earlier spacecraft.
