Background
Weakened by seizures from Prince Regal's poison, Fitz returns to Buckkeep, begins a secret courtship with Molly and bonds with the young wolf Nighteyes through the Wit. King-in-Waiting Verity uses the Skill against the Red-Ships and then leaves for the mountains to seek the Elderlings, while King Shrewd wastes away. When Shrewd dies, Fitz kills Serene and Justin, the coterie members who had drained the king's life, and is imprisoned, accused of regicide, exposed as Witted and tortured by Regal. He escapes into Nighteyes's mind; his body is buried, and Burrich and Chade later exhume it and coax him back. The novel was nominated for the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel.
