Background
Liveships are built of wizardwood from up the Rain Wild River and quicken, gaining a personality, when three generations of their owners have died aboard. When Captain Ephron Vestrit dies aboard Vivacia, the ship goes not to his daughter Althea but to her sister Keffria, whose Chalcedean husband Kyle takes command, enters the slave trade and banishes Althea. Kyle forces his son Wintrow, who is training as a priest of Sa, to serve aboard. Meanwhile the pirate captain Kennit, who dreams of uniting the pirate townships under himself as king, captures Vivacia after her slaves revolt, and in Bingtown Malta Vestrit attracts the attention of the Rain Wilder Reyn Khuprus.
