Background
Grieving for Nighteyes, Fitz reluctantly becomes Skillmaster to Prince Dutiful, who was conceived by Verity through Fitz's body by means of the Skill and is both Skilled and Witted. He meets Thick, a young man stronger in the Skill than anyone he has known, tracks the Piebalds to Buckkeep town and is mortally wounded, and Dutiful, the Fool, Thick and Chade join their Skill to save him, becoming Dutiful's coterie. Queen Kettricken plans to betroth Dutiful to the Outislander Narcheska Elliania, who will not wed him unless he slays the dragon Icefyre, and the Fool reveals that he has foreseen his own death on the quest.
