Background
Fitz has wandered with his wolf Nighteyes and settled in a remote cottage as Tom Badgerlock, raising his adopted son Hap. Chade asks him to return to Buckkeep to teach Prince Dutiful the Skill, and the Fool comes to find him. When Dutiful vanishes just before his diplomatic wedding to an Outislander princess, Fitz becomes the servant of Lord Golden, the Fool's new identity at Buckkeep, to track him down. They find that Dutiful has been coerced into bonding with a hunting cat that holds the mind of Peladine, a dead Piebald woman who means to take over his body; Fitz kills her, and Nighteyes dies in his arms.
