Background

Aboard Vivacia, Wintrow saves the pirate Kennit's life by amputating his infected leg, and the ship comes to believe in Kennit's goal of becoming King of the Pirate Isles. Althea Vestrit, Brashen Trell and the woodcarver Amber refit the mad liveship Paragon and sail him after Vivacia. In Bingtown the Old Traders turn against the Satrap and his Chalcedean mercenaries; the Satrap is abducted, Bingtown burns, and the Vestrits flee with Reyn Khuprus to the Rain Wilds, where the dragon trapped in the last wizardwood log calls to Malta, promising to rescue Vivacia if she frees it.
