Background

The Straw Hat crew first run into him on Long Ring Long Land, where he freezes Nico Robin and then Luffy when Luffy tries to take him on. Years earlier he was at the Buster Call on Ohara, and it was Kuzan who helped the young Robin get away.

After the Marineford war, Sengoku backed Aokiji to follow him as fleet admiral, but Kuzan lost the duel with Akainu for the post. Unwilling to serve under Akainu and disillusioned with the World Government's idea of Absolute Justice, he quit the Navy. Soon afterwards, for reasons still unknown, he joined the Blackbeard Pirates, whose ranks had grown with prisoners from Impel Down, and he now captains the crew's 10th ship as one of its Ten Titanic Captains.

His look is modelled on the actor Yūsaku Matsuda. Takehito Koyasu voices him in Japanese; in the Funimation dub Bob Carter voiced him first and Jason Douglas later.
