Marshall D. Teach was originally a member of the Whitebeard Pirates. He left the crew after murdering the 4th division commander, Thatch. Following this, he captured Portgas D. Ace and delivered him to the Marines, which triggered the war at Marineford. During the war, after Whitebeard was killed, Teach used an unknown method to steal Whitebeard's Devil Fruit power. Two years after Whitebeard's death, Blackbeard is considered to have assumed Whitebeard's position as one of the Four Emperors.

In Their Own Story

Teach's defining moment came during the Paramount War at Marineford. After Whitebeard was killed by the Blackbeard Pirates, Teach revealed his ability to steal Devil Fruit powers, taking Whitebeard's Tremor-Tremor Fruit ability for himself. This unprecedented act allowed him to claim the position of one of the Four Emperors, filling the power vacuum left by Whitebeard's death.
