Background

She first appeared in chapter 114, published in Weekly Shōnen Jump on November 22, 1999, as an antagonist, and later became the seventh member of the crew and the sixth to join. She ate the Flower-Flower Fruit, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that lets her sprout copies of her limbs, and later her whole body, from any surface within range, and she can see and hear through duplicate eyes and ears. As the only survivor of the island of Ohara, she is the only known living person who can read the Poneglyphs, which the World Government forbids and regards as a threat. Oda based her design on Mia Wallace, Uma Thurman's character in Pulp Fiction. Yuriko Yamaguchi voices her in the Japanese anime, and Lera Abova plays her in the live-action series.
