The Marineford war in One Piece is the battle between the Marines and Whitebeard's forces over the execution of Portgas D. Ace, Luffy's brother, at Marine Headquarters.

Lore & Background

Ace is captured by Blackbeard and moved from Impel Down to Marineford to be executed. Luffy breaks into the prison and, with Buggy and members of the Revolutionary Army, frees its inmates and leads them into the war. The fighting ends with Whitebeard's death at the hands of the Blackbeard Pirates, and a broken-hearted Luffy is evacuated by Trafalgar Law with Jimbei. After the war Sengoku retires and Akainu wins the fleet admiral post from Aokiji; the ruined island becomes the new base G-1, while headquarters moves to the New World. Luffy returns once with Jimbei and Rayleigh to send a hidden message to his crew, then trains with Rayleigh for two years to learn Haki.
