The Hyuga Clan is a Konohagakure family divided into a main household and a Branch House, known for the Byakugan and its Gentle Fist style of combat. Hinata Hyuga is the former heiress of the Hyuga clan, raised as the eldest of Hiashi Hyuga's two children. She was nearly kidnapped at a young age, though saved by her father, an event that served as the catalyst of the Hyuga Affair, which ended with Hizashi willingly taking the place of Hiashi to prevent a breach in the treaty between Konohagakure and Kumogakure. Growing up, Hinata was trained by Hiashi, but he began to have doubts about her ability to lead the clan after seeing her struggles during their sessions, leading him to apparently disown her and have her younger sister, Hanabi Hyuga, as the heiress.

The Hyuga clan's structure is defined by a rigid caste system: the Main Household, led by Hiashi Hyuga as the elder between him and his twin brother Hizashi, and the Branch House, whose only purpose is to serve the upper branch. Hizashi, the younger twin, was demoted to the Branch House. This brutal hierarchy created deep resentment within the clan for generations, particularly fueling the tragedy of Neji Hyuga's early life before he found his own path. Hinata, as the eldest of Hiashi's two children, was originally raised as the heiress to the Hyuga clan's main household, but after her father's doubts about her ability to lead, her younger sister Hanabi became the heiress instead.
Reader's Guide
Hiashi Hyuga heads the clan; the Branch House prodigy Neji repaired his estranged relations with the main house and trained with Hiashi and Hinata at the end of Part I. In combat the clan relies on the Byakugan and its Gentle Fist style. Hinata, now named Hinata Uzumaki, has become the mother of Naruto's three children (two biological, one adopted).

- Kishimoto had Hinata's cousin Neji Hyuga killed in the final arc so that Hinata, protected by him, could offer support to Naruto.
- In the film The Last: Naruto the Movie (2014), Hinata knits a red scarf for Naruto, based on how Kishimoto's wife had actually once done for him.
