Hexaplex
A genus of murex snails with a rich fossil record.
Hexaplex is a genus of marine gastropod mollusks, specifically sea snails that range from medium to large in size. They belong to the subfamily Muricinae within the family Muricidae, a group commonly called murex shells or rock snails. The genus has a fossil record stretching from the Paleocene through the Quaternary period, and its fossilized shells have been discovered worldwide.
The shells of this genus are solid and globose, typical of the Muricidae family. They feature five to eight varices, which are often somewhat leaf-like in form.
The genus includes numerous living and extinct species. Among the living species are *Hexaplex angularis*, *Hexaplex bifasciatus*, *Hexaplex brassica*, *Hexaplex cichoreum*, *Hexaplex conatus*, *Hexaplex duplex*, *Hexaplex erythrostomus*, *Hexaplex fulvescens*, *Hexaplex kuesterianus*, *Hexaplex megacerus*, *Hexaplex pecchiolianus*, *Hexaplex princeps*, *Hexaplex regius*, *Hexaplex rileyi*, *Hexaplex rosarium*, *Hexaplex saharicus*, *Hexaplex stainforthi*, and *Hexaplex trunculus*. Extinct species include *Hexaplex arietinus*, *Hexaplex bourgeoisi*, *Hexaplex ledoni*, *Hexaplex tapparonii*, *Hexaplex tridentatus*, and *Hexaplex turonensis*, along with several others such as *Hexaplex (Hexaplex) colei*, *Hexaplex (Hexaplex) engonatus*, *Hexaplex (Hexaplex) etheringtoni*, *Hexaplex (Hexaplex) katherinae*, *Hexaplex (Hexaplex) marksi*, *Hexaplex (Hexaplex) silvaticus*, *Hexaplex (Hexaplex) supernus*, *Hexaplex (Hexaplex) texanus*, *Hexaplex (Hexaplex) vanuxemi*, *Hexaplex (Hexaplex) veatchi*, *Hexaplex (Trunculariopsis) bourgeoisi*, *Hexaplex (Trunculariopsis) brevicanthos*, *Hexaplex (Trunculariopsis) campanii*, *Hexaplex (Trunculariopsis) rudis*, and *Hexaplex hertweckorum*.
Several species once placed in *Hexaplex* have since been reassigned to other genera. For instance, *Hexaplex ambiguus* is now *Muricanthus ambiguus*, *Hexaplex anatomica* is *Homalocantha anatomica*, *Hexaplex bojadorensis* is *Favartia bojadorensis*, *Hexaplex nigritus* is *Muricanthus nigritus*, *Hexaplex radix* is *Muricanthus radix*, *Hexaplex strausi* is *Muricanthus strausi*, and *Hexaplex varius* is *Chicoreus varius*.

Lore & Background
Shells within Hexaplex are solid and globose, containing five to eight varices that are more or less foliaceous. The genus includes numerous species, both extant and extinct, with extinct species such as Hexaplex (Hexaplex) colei and Hexaplex (Hexaplex) engonatus known from the fossil record. The species Hexaplex trunculus is one of the better-known members, with a fossil shell illustrated in reference works.
The genus has been subject to taxonomic revisions, with several species brought into synonymy. For example, Hexaplex ambiguus is now considered a synonym of Muricanthus ambiguus, and Hexaplex radix is a synonym of Muricanthus radix. Some species have been reassigned to other genera, such as Hexaplex anatomica to Homalocantha anatomica. The spelling of Hexaplex kuesterianus has been noted as a misspelling of Hexaplex kuesterianus.
Extinct species within the genus are numerous, with many assigned to subgenera such as Hexaplex (Hexaplex) and Hexaplex (Trunculariopsis). These fossils have been found globally, indicating a wide distribution in ancient seas.
Reader's Guide
Hexaplex holds significance as a genus that bridges the fossil and modern records of murex snails. Its presence from the Paleocene to the Quaternary demonstrates a long evolutionary history, with shells found worldwide providing evidence of past marine environments. The genus includes species that have been studied in taxonomic works, such as the comprehensive guide 'Murex shells of the world' and the more recent 'Fossil and Recent Muricidae of the world'. The synonymy of several species reflects ongoing refinement in understanding muricid relationships. Hexaplex species, with their solid, globose shells and foliaceous varices, contribute to the morphological diversity of the Muricidae family. The fossil species, including those from the Paleocene, offer insights into the early diversification of this group. The genus continues to be a subject of study in malacology, with new extinct species described as recently as 2016.
