Ergalataxinae
A subfamily of predatory sea snails in the rock snail family.
Ergalataxinae is a subfamily of small to medium-sized predatory sea snails, marine gastropods belonging to the rock snail family Muricidae. Their shells, made of aragonite, typically have zero to two varices. This group originally included only four species: *Bedevina birileffi*, *Ergalatax contracta*, *E. tokugawai*, and *Cytharomorula vexillum*. Over time, the genera *Morula*, *Spinidrupa*, *Cronia*, and *Drupella* were moved into Ergalataxinae from the subfamily Rapaninae (also known as Thaidinae). As new species were described and existing genera were split, the subfamily grew to contain roughly 150 species spread across more than 20 genera.

Lore & Background
The subfamily Ergalataxinae was originally defined with only four species. Its composition expanded significantly when genera such as Morula, Spinidrupa, Cronia, and Drupella were transferred from the Rapaninae (also called Thaidinae). Subsequent descriptions of new species and splitting of genera have resulted in a subfamily of approximately 150 species distributed across more than 20 genera. The classification of several genera—Daphnellopsis, Lindapterys, Maculotriton, and Uttleya—within Ergalataxinae is considered doubtful. Molecular phylogeny based on gene-sequence analysis of four genes from 52 Ergalataxine species revealed three major clades, with four suprageneric sub-clades. Clade A includes Tenguella, Muricodrupa, and Claremontiella; Clade B contains Morula and Murichorda; Clade C comprises Phrygiomurex and further sub-clades: Clade W (Lataxiena, Usilla, some Orania), Clade X (Drupella, Cronia, Maculotriton, Ergalatax), Clade Y (Oppomorus, Spinidrupa, Bedevina), and Clade Z (Cytharomorula, some Orania, Pascula, Lauta). Genetic material from Azumamorula, Daphnellopsis, Lindapterys, and Uttleya was not included in the analysis. Cronia, Maculotriton, and Ergalatax may prove to be a single species, in which case the name Cronia would have precedence; if Ergalatax is subsumed into Cronia, this would impact the name of the subfamily. Most Spinidrupa grouped with Bedevina, but the type species S. euracantha was more basal to clade Y. Orania is polyphyletic, but its type species was not included.
Reader's Guide
The subfamily Ergalataxinae holds significance as a diverse group within the Muricidae, encompassing approximately 150 species across more than 20 genera. Its taxonomic history reflects ongoing refinement: originally containing only four species, it expanded through the transfer of genera from Rapaninae and subsequent splitting. Molecular phylogeny has clarified relationships, revealing three major clades and four suprageneric sub-clades, though some genera remain of uncertain placement. The potential synonymy of Cronia, Maculotriton, and Ergalatax—with Cronia having precedence—could affect the subfamily name itself. The polyphyly of Orania and the basal position of Spinidrupa euracantha relative to its congenerics highlight unresolved evolutionary questions. The subfamily's classification continues to be revised as new genetic data emerge, with some genera (Daphnellopsis, Lindapterys, Maculotriton, Uttleya) considered doubtfully placed. The shell morphology, with 0–2 varices in aragonitic shells, provides a unifying characteristic for this group of predatory marine gastropods.
