Triceratops

Triceratops appears in the first film as a sick dinosaur, replacing the novel's Stegosaurus. Screenwriter Malia Scotch Marmo made the change because she found Triceratops adorable, and it was a childhood favourite of Spielberg's.

It was an animatronic by Stan Winston's team, sculpted by Joey Orosco and worked by eight puppeteers. Spielberg shot its scene earlier than planned, making it the first dinosaur filmed, and he improvised Grant lying on its breathing belly. Its design drew on elephants and white rhinoceroses, its back texture on fossil skin impressions, and Winston hosed it down and caked it in mud so it looked lived-in.
