The name Telangana is derived from 'Telinga', used to distinguish the Telugu-speaking region of the erstwhile Hyderabad State from its Marathi-speaking Marathwada. One theory traces it to 'Trilinga desha' ('land of three lingas'), referencing three Shaivite shrines: Kaleshwaram, Srisailam, and Draksharama. Historian Jayadheer Tirumala Rao suggests a Gondi origin from 'Telangadh', meaning 'south', as recorded in Gond script dating back about 2,000 years. The term appears in the 14th-century title of Malik Maqbul Tilangani, a commander of Warangal Fort and later a minister under Firuz Shah Tughlaq.
