Valisthea

The world of Final Fantasy XVI, powered by Mothercrystals and divided by Eikons.

Valisthea is the world of Final Fantasy XVI. Across its two continents, Ash and Storm, stand huge Mothercrystals that supply aether to the population, with shards mined for commercial use. Bearers, people who can use magic without crystals, face prejudice and slavery, and overuse slowly turns them to stone.

Lore & Background

Valisthea's politics turn on the Eikons, powerful magical creatures whose hosts are called Dominants. There are eight, one per element: Phoenix, Shiva, Ramuh, Leviathan, Titan, Garuda, Odin and Bahamut. A second Eikon of fire, Ifrit, should not exist, and it drives the main plot. Humanity's ancestors, the Fallen, once ruled the land before a cataclysm left only ruins.

Reader's Guide

The main nations are the Grand Duchy of Rosaria, the Holy Empire of Sanbreque and the Dhalmekian Republic on Storm, the Kingdom of Waloed on Ash, and the neutral Crystalline Dominion between them, with the isolated Iron Kingdom off Storm's coast.

By the time of the game, a loss of aether called the Blight is withering all life and pushing the nations into conflict. Depending on where they are born, Dominants may lead nations, be tolerated for their power, or be abused, killed or used as weapons of war.
