Lore & Background
Ivalice is mostly a medieval high fantasy world drawn from Arthurian legend, with some science fiction elements. The landscapes of Final Fantasy XII were modelled on places around the Mediterranean, and Vagrant Story's Lea Monde was based on Saint-Emilion. In the world's chronology, Final Fantasy XII comes first, in an age of advanced magic and technology when Humes shared the world with Moogles, the Viera, the Bangaa and the Seeq.
Reader's Guide
Games set in Ivalice are linked by in-world references such as the Kiltia religion and the Judges, and by recurring figures like the Espers, or Lucavi, and the Moogle clan leader Montblanc. Matsuno developed the setting until he left Square Enix in 2005, after which it continued under the Ivalice Alliance label.
