Kuja

A narcissistic agent who chose to destroy all life rather than face his own mortality.

Kuja stands as the primary antagonist of Final Fantasy IX, a fictional character created for the 2000 video game. A member of the same race as protagonist Zidane, Kuja exhibits distinct narcissistic and egomaniacal traits. His plot initially centers on overthrowing his creator before evolving into a plan to destroy all life. Designed with an effete appearance and mannerisms that have sparked extensive discussion regarding gender and sexuality among fans, he is often interpreted as a queer character despite never being explicitly shown as gay or transgender. His fear of mortality serves as the driving force behind his descent from manipulative schemer to universal destroyer.

Lore & Background

Kuja was created by a man named Garland on the planet Terra with the specific intention of replacing the souls of Gaia's inhabitants. Designed as an artificial lifeform called a Genome, Kuja possessed only a limited lifespan. To secure immortality and overthrow Garland, he sought the four shards of Alexander, a powerful Eidolon. He manipulated Queen Brahne of Alexandria by supplying her with Black Mages—soldiers produced via mist from the Iifa Tree—to conquer other kingdoms. After Brahne attempted to kill him using the Eidolon Bahamut, Kuja seized control of the airship Invincible and killed Brahne instead. Upon learning he was merely an "Angel of Death" meant to be replaced once Zidane matured, Kuja's despair turned to madness. He usurped Garland on Terra, entered a Trance state using captive souls, and destroyed Terra in his attempt to erase existence.

Reader's Guide

Kuja appears in Final Fantasy IX as its main antagonist, initially posing as a manipulative figure controlling Queen Brahne and her Black Mage army. Players first encounter him in Burmecia following the kingdom's destruction by Beatrix. His strategy involves eliminating threats and manipulating various powers to his end. As the story progresses, he acts directly, using the airship Invincible to seize control of the eidolon Bahamut. In the final acts, Kuja enters Trance using the souls captive on the Invincible and defeats Zidane and his friends. His ultimate battle takes place at the Iifa Tree, where he fights Zidane directly. Defeating him triggers the arrival of Necron, requiring players to survive this additional encounter before the story concludes.
