Its center of origin is thought to be the Philippines, but archaeological evidence from the Niah Caves of Borneo (Late Pleistocene, less than 40,000 years BP) and the Ille Cave of Palawan (11,000 BP) suggests that humans exploited starchy plants in Island Southeast Asia long before the Austronesian expansion. Some authors propose an origin in Mainland Southeast Asia, but the greatest phenotypic variability is found in the Philippines and New Guinea.
Among Austronesian cultures, D. alata and Dioscorea esculenta were the only yams regularly cultivated and eaten, as other species contain higher levels of the toxin dioscorine. D. alata was particularly valued for its large tubers and suitability for long transport in Austronesian ships, leading to its introduction into the Pacific Islands, New Zealand, Madagascar, and the Comoros.
