Afromimus

Afromimus, whose name means "Africa mimic," is a genus of ceratosaurian theropod dinosaur. Its fossils come from the Early Cretaceous Elrhaz Formation in Niger, and the only species is *A. tenerensis*. Paul Sereno named it in 2017, basing the description on a partial skeleton found in the Ténéré Desert that included parts of the right leg, vertebrae, and ribs. Initially classified as an ornithomimosaurian, later studies have argued that it belongs within or near the superfamily Abelisauroidea.

**Discovery and naming** The sole known specimen of Afromimus consists of a partial skeleton. This includes seven tail vertebrae (estimated to be the 15th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 22nd, 24th, and 27th in the tail), bones from the right hindlimb (tibia, fibula, tarsals, and phalanges), and a piece of a rib. All these elements were found within a 1-meter radius. The discovery occurred in 1997 at the Gadoufaoua locality in the Elrhaz Formation, located in the Ténéré Desert of Niger. The specimen, catalogued as MNBH GAD112, is housed in the Musée National Boubou Hama in Niamey, Niger. Because the bones were exposed to the elements when found, the skeleton may have been more complete while still buried. The hindlimb bones were found in their original positions, though weathered, while the tail vertebrae were scattered; the last vertebra in the sequence was discovered several meters away from the rest. Paul Sereno published a description of MNBH GAD112 in 2017, naming it as the holotype of a new genus and species, *Afromimus tenerensis*. The genus name combines the Latin prefix *Afro-* ("Africa") with the Greek *mimos* ("mimic"), reflecting the initial interpretation that the specimen was an ornithomimosaur. The species name combines the Ténéré Desert with the Latin suffix *-ensis* ("from"). In 2019, Mauricio Cerroni and colleagues published a reassessment that placed Afromimus within the Abelisauroidea.

The only known specimen of Afromimus is a partial skeleton consisting of seven tail vertebrae, bones from the right hindlimb, and part of a rib, all found within a radius of 1 m. It was discovered in 1997 at the Gadoufaoua locality in the Elrhaz Formation, in the Ténéré Desert of Niger. The specimen is catalogued as MNBH GAD112 in the Musée National Boubou Hama. Since the specimen was exposed to the elements when it was found, it may have been more complete when it was still buried.
