Acrotholus, whose name comes from the Greek for "highest dome," is an extinct genus of pachycephalosaurian dinosaur from the late Cretaceous Santonian stage, found in Canada's Milk River Formation. Its only known species, *A. audeti*, honors rancher Roy Audet, who granted access to his land where the fossil was uncovered. This find prompted fresh insights into how small-bodied organisms are preserved in the fossil record and clarified the early evolution of pachycephalosaurs. With its distinctive thickened skull roof, Acrotholus stands as one of the earliest undisputed members of the pachycephalosaur family. Like its relatives, it was a bipedal herbivore with a domed head, a feature long linked to head-butting behavior among its own kind, though exactly how they made contact remains uncertain.
The holotype specimen was collected in 2008 from the Deadhorse Coulee Member of the Milk River Formation in southern Alberta, a geological layer known for exposing Late Santonian life. The fossil consists of a nearly complete frontoparietal dome, including its front half. Pachycephalosaurs are unusual among dinosaurs because of their small size—typically 40 kilograms or less—and their fossils are often just skull caps. Smaller bones are easily destroyed by scavengers or weather, creating a preservation bias against tiny species. However, pachycephalosaurs' thick domes resist such damage, which helps explain why about 66% of known specimens are only cranial remains. Acrotholus' discovery hints that many small-bodied dinosaurs may have left no trace, suggesting the late Mesozoic ecosystem was more complex than previously thought. Similar conclusions have emerged from Asian pachycephalosaurs, whose flat-domed forms have sparked debate about their growth stages.
The skull of *A. audeti* differs from most pachycephalosaurs in having an oval dome that reaches a maximum thickness of 55 millimeters above the cerebral fossa. The absence of tesserae or tubercles shows the specimen was past its juvenile phase. CT scans reveal low vascularity, high bone density, and fully fused frontal-frontal and frontoparietal sutures inside the skull.
