Acristavus, whose name translates to "non-crested grandfather," is a genus of saurolophine dinosaur that lived during the Campanian stage of the Cretaceous. Its fossils come from the Two Medicine Formation in Montana and the Wahweap Formation in Utah. The species A. gagslarsoni was formally described in 2011. What sets Acristavus apart from almost all other hadrosaurids is its complete lack of skull ornamentation. This find holds particular importance for paleontology because it backs the idea that the common ancestor of all hadrosaurids had no such cranial decorations, and that these features evolved independently later in the Saurolophinae and Lambeosaurinae subfamilies.
The first specimen, designated MOR 1155, was uncovered in 1999 by C. Riley Nelson in Teton County, Montana, within a hard, tan calcareous sandstone layer from the Two Medicine Formation, dating to around 79 million years ago. This holotype includes a nearly complete skull and associated postcranial bones: eleven neck vertebrae, three partial back vertebrae, one tail vertebra near the base, several ribs, the left upper arm bone, left forearm bone, right breastbone, left pubis, left thigh bone, left shin bone, two left foot bones, five left toe bones, and one right toe bone. A second specimen, UMNHVP 16607, was assigned to Acristavus in 2011, excavated from the Smokey Mountain Road site in the Reynolds Point Member of Utah's Wahweap Formation. Collected by C. R. Nelson in 2000 from a cemented yellow sandstone, its age is estimated at 80.69 million years, with a possible range of 81.05 to 80.19 million years. This partial articulated skull preserves both lacrimal bones, a complete braincase, and one neck vertebra.

According to Gates (2011), Acristavus can be identified by: an enlarged rearward brow on the postorbital bone and the basioccipital, which extends backward well past the upper border of the foramen magnum more than in other hadrosaurines; a deep, squared-off frontonasal suture; a swelling where the prefrontal and frontal bones interlock; and a deep depression on the outer surface of the postorbital's jugal process.

The paleoenvironment of the Wahweap Formation included lakes, floodplains, and east-flowing rivers, with a wet, seasonal climate. Acristavus shared its habitat with other dinosaurs such as the lambeosaur Adelolophus hutchisoni, the ceratopsian Diabloceratops eatoni, and the theropod Lythronax argestes, as well as various fish, turtles, crocodilians, and mammals.
