Siphamia
A genus of cardinalfishes commensal with sea urchins.
Siphamia is a genus of cardinalfish found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Some species in this group live closely with sea urchins in a commensal relationship. The only known fossil from this genus is *Siphamia minor*, a small species identified from otoliths in Miocene-era rocks (Burdigalian stage) of southwestern India.

Lore & Background
Siphamia is a genus of cardinalfishes native to the Indian and Pacific Ocean. Several of its species are known to be commensal with various species of sea urchins, indicating a specialized ecological relationship. The only fossil record for the genus is Siphamia minor, a dwarf otolith-based species described from the Burdigalian (Miocene) of southwestern India. The genus includes 26 recognized species, many described in the 2010s by ichthyologists Gon and G. R. Allen, along with other authors such as Lachner, Whitley, and Weber. Species names often reflect morphological traits (e.g., Siphamia elongata, Siphamia cuneiceps) or habitats (e.g., Siphamia corallicola, Siphamia spinicola).
Reader's Guide
Siphamia is notable as a genus of cardinalfishes that includes both extant species and a rare fossil representative. The fossil Siphamia minor, based solely on otoliths from the Miocene of southwestern India, provides the only known paleontological evidence for the genus, offering a glimpse into its evolutionary history. The genus is ecologically significant because several species are commensal with sea urchins, a relationship that may influence their distribution and behavior. The majority of recognized species were described in the 21st century, reflecting ongoing taxonomic work. The genus is distributed across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with species such as Siphamia mossambica (sea urchin cardinal) and Siphamia tubifer highlighting morphological diversity. The fossil record, though limited, underscores the long-term presence of Siphamia in the Indo-Pacific region.
