The yellow longnose butterflyfish (*Forcipiger flavissimus*), also called the forceps butterflyfish or forcepsfish, belongs to the marine fish family Chaetodontidae. It reaches a maximum length of 22 cm (8.7 in) and is commonly sold in the aquarium trade.
This species has a very broad range across the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the eastern coast of Africa to Hawaii, including the Red Sea. It also occurs in the eastern Pacific Ocean, from Baja California south to the Revillagigedo Islands and the Galapagos.
Yellow longnose butterflyfish are territorial and patrol their coral patches with a single monogamous partner. Aggression between individuals is usually limited: males chase other males, and females chase other females. Females defend food resources from other females, while males defend territories that contain a female from other males. Chasing is rare, but when it happens it is always between members of the same sex.
Territoriality works well for this species because its main food sources are stable, predictable, and spread evenly across a territory. Their monogamous pairing is closely tied to this behavior.
