Donetsk Oblast was established on 2 July 1932 out of parts of the Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions (then okrugs/oblasts). Initially named Stalino Oblast in honor of Joseph Stalin, it was renamed in 1961 as part of de-Stalinization after the Donets River and Donets Ridge. The original Stalino Oblast (created in 1932) was split in June 1938 into Stalino Oblast and Voroshylovhrad Oblast.

During World War II, the oblast was under Nazi German occupation from fall 1941 to fall 1943 and was the site of war crimes including the Artemivsk massacre and the Massacre of Grischino. In the 1991 referendum, 83.9% of voters approved Ukraine's declaration of independence. In the mid-1990s, the region became known for heightened criminal activity, including killings of high-profile business people.

In 2014, parts of the oblast were taken over by Russian-backed separatists who declared an independent Donetsk People's Republic, sparking an eight-year war. During the 2022 Russian invasion, renewed heavy fighting erupted, and in September 2022 Russia declared the annexation of the whole oblast, though it had only conquered 60% at the time, and the annexation was not recognized internationally.

The oblast's history also includes its role as a base for the pro-Russian Party of Regions and the powerful 'Donetsk Clan' in Ukrainian politics, as well as its involvement in the 2004 autonomy threats and the 2014 pro-Russian unrest that escalated into the war in Donbas.
