2011 Tour de France
Voeckler's long stand in yellow, then Evans against the clock.
The 2011 Tour de France was the 98th edition, starting on 2 July at the Passage du Gois and ending on the Champs-Élysées on 24 July, 21 stages in 23 days over 3,430.5 km with two stages dipping into Italy and an emphasis on the Alps for the centenary of their first visit. Cadel Evans won, the first Australian and, officially, the second non-European to do so; Andy Schleck was second and his brother Fränk third. Philippe Gilbert took the first yellow jersey by winning stage 1, Thor Hushovd held it after his team's team-time-trial win until stage 9, and Thomas Voeckler then wore it through the Pyrenees and up to the final Alpine stage; Andy Schleck, winner of stage 18, led into the individual time trial, where Evans took enough time to seize the lead and carry it to Paris. Yohann Gène became the first black rider in the Tour's history. Evans, at 34, was among the oldest winners.
