The 2020 Tour de France, the 107th edition of cycling's grandest race, is remembered as the edition that brought professional cycling back to the world after the global pandemic forced a months-long halt to the sport. Held from late August to late September 2020, it began in Nice and concluded on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
The race is defined by the emergence of Tadej Pogačar, the 22-year-old Slovenian riding for UAE Team Emirates, who seized the yellow jersey in the Alps and never let go, delivering a performance that announced a new generation to the peloton. Defending champion Egan Bernal started as one of the favourites but was dropped in the mountains, and the race was settled only on the penultimate day, when Tadej Pogačar overturned Primož Roglič's lead in the time trial to La Planche des Belles Filles.

Background
The 2020 Tour carried the weight of an entire sport's return. After the pandemic shut down professional cycling for months, the postponed race, run from 29 August to 20 September instead of July, became a statement that the peloton would reunite.
The narrative arc was set almost immediately. Egan Bernal, the 2019 champion, was launched from the peloton on Stage 2 in a high-speed crash that ended his Tour and left the yellow jersey in limbo. From that moment, the race belonged to the young and the hungry. Pogačar, already a star from his 2019 debut, arrived in the Alps with a ferocity that surprised even his own team. His attacks on the Col d'Izoard and the Col de la Loze were not incremental gains but decisive ruptures, each one widening a gap that the chasing group could not close.
What made the 2020 edition endure in fan memory is not merely the result but the context: a generation change, a debutant who became the first since Laurent Fignon to win on his Tour debut and the first since Eddy Merckx to take three jerseys in one Tour, and a peloton that, for three weeks, carried the sport's collective hope back into the light.
