The 2014 Tour de France was the 101st edition, a 3,660.5 km race of 21 stages that started in Leeds, Yorkshire, on 5 July and finished on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on 27 July. Vincenzo Nibali won the general classification by more than seven minutes, the biggest winning margin since 1997. He took the yellow jersey by winning the second stage into Sheffield with a late attack, regained it for good with a late attack on La Planche des Belles Filles, and won four stages in all, the last at Hautacam.
The pre-race favourite and defending champion Chris Froome crashed out after falls on stages 4 and 5, with a fractured wrist and hand. The route was notable for its sections of sett paving on the wet fifth stage, five high-altitude finishes and a single 54 km time trial on the penultimate day, won by Tony Martin. Marcel Kittel won four stages including the finale in Paris, and Rafał Majka won two high-mountain stages and the polka-dot jersey. A one-day women's race, La Course by Le Tour de France, was held on the Champs-Élysées before the final stage.
