2019 Tour de France
Alaphilippe's long summer in yellow, and Bernal's breakthrough in the Alps.
The 2019 Tour de France was the 106th edition, 3,365.8 km in 21 stages from Brussels on 6 July to the Champs-Élysées on 28 July, with 176 riders from 22 teams. Egan Bernal won, the first Latin American winner, ahead of his teammate and 2018 winner Geraint Thomas, with Steven Kruijswijk third. Kruijswijk's teammate Mike Teunissen won the stage 1 sprint and the first yellow jersey; Julian Alaphilippe took the lead by winning stage 3, lost it after stage 6 to breakaway rider Giulio Ciccone for two stages, regained it after stage 8 and, against all expectations, held it for the next eleven stages through the Pyrenees, before losing it to Bernal on stage 19, the second Alpine day, which was shortened by bad weather. Bernal held the lead over the final two stages, and Peter Sagan won the points classification for a record seventh time.
