2022 Tour de France

Copenhagen to Paris: Vingegaard breaks Pogačar in the Alps.

The 2022 Tour de France was the 109th edition, starting in Copenhagen on 1 July and finishing on the Champs-Élysées on 24 July. Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark won for the first time, with two-time defending champion Tadej Pogačar second and former winner Geraint Thomas third, the first podium since 1997 on which all three had stood before. Wout van Aert controlled the lead for much of the first week until Pogačar took charge with two consecutive stage wins; in the Alps Vingegaard's team attacked and he became the first rider to take serious time from Pogačar, then extended his lead through the Pyrenees and the final time trial to become the first Danish winner since Bjarne Riis in 1996.

The race was marked by climate-change protests and a 40-degree heatwave, and COVID-19 forced out seventeen riders, among them stage winners Magnus Cort and Simon Clarke and former winner Chris Froome, leaving the fewest finishers since 2000. Van Aert won the points classification with 480 points.
