Background

Spencer later takes part in the coup against Rick led by Nicholas, blaming Rick for the deaths of both his parents. While the Saviors are staying in Alexandria, he approaches Negan to tell him that it would be better if he led the community and that Rick cannot be trusted; he asks whether Negan could kill Rick so that Spencer can take charge. Disgusted by this attempt to backstab his own leader, Negan calls him a coward for asking someone else to do his dirty work and disembowels him on the spot.

On the television series Spencer is played by Austin Nichols, at first as a recurring role in the fifth season and as a series regular from the sixth. Brian Huntington's panel-to-screen comparison found Spencer's introduction on the show pretty similar to his first comic appearance. Reviewing the seventh-season episode "Service" for USA Today, Kelly Lawler called him "Deanna's brat of a son" while conceding that he was not wrong to yell at Rick for getting Alexandria into its situation with the Saviors.

Negan kills Spencer in the mid-season finale "Hearts Still Beating", a death adapted from Issue #111 of the comic; Kirsten Acuna of Business Insider wrote that it was obvious from the moment Spencer approached Negan that things would not go well for him.
