The Trainman (played by Bruce Spence) is an exiled program in the employ of the Merovingian, tasked with smuggling other programs from the machine world to the Matrix when they seek exile. He controls a subway line situated in Mobil Ave, a transition zone serving as a buffer between the simulated reality of the Matrix and the machine world. He takes the appearance of an unkempt homeless man. Residing in this desolate limbo where standard rules do not apply, he acts as the sole gatekeeper for passage back into the main simulation.

The Trainman resides at the Mobil Avenue subway station (Mobil being an anagram for Limbo), a separate world from the Matrix that can only be entered or exited by subway train and where Neo's powers do not extend. This location exists outside the standard Matrix simulation, acting as a transition zone between the Matrix and the machine world, where physics and code are fluid. He serves as an employee of the Merovingian, adhering strictly to the loyalty owed to that specific program rather than the Oracle or the Machines. Neo wakes up at Mobil Avenue after falling into a coma, and when he tries to force the Trainman to let him board, he is easily defeated without his powers.

The Trainman acts as a neutral gatekeeper within the Matrix's infrastructure, specifically operating from the limbo zone known as Mobil Ave. He smuggles programs from the machine world into the Matrix when they seek exile. His role is pivotal in The Matrix Revolutions: he holds Neo captive within the station after the latter's consciousness becomes stranded there. Morpheus, Trinity and Seraph go to the Merovingian's club to free Neo; in the resulting Mexican standoff the Trainman holds Seraph at gunpoint while Trinity holds him at gunpoint, until Persephone convinces the Merovingian to free Neo. The Trainman is not seen again and was possibly assimilated by Smith, who calls Sati "the last Exile" before assimilating her.
