Background
Lionsgate announced in July 2012 that Mockingjay would be split into two parts, and Lawrence, director of Catching Fire, was confirmed in November that year to direct both. Principal photography began in September 2013 in Boston, Atlanta and Los Angeles and ran until June 2014, with Part 2 shot back-to-back; locations also included Paris and Berlin. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Donald Sutherland return, joined by Julianne Moore as President Alma Coin, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee, Mahershala Ali as Boggs and Natalie Dormer as Cressida. Robert Knepper's Antonius is a character who does not appear in the books.
Rescued from the destroyed arena of the 75th Hunger Games, Katniss is taken to District 13, where Coin asks her to become the "Mockingjay", a symbol of the rebellion. She agrees after seeing Peeta used on state television, and her film team shoots her in District 8, where Snow orders an airstrike on a hospital, and in District 12, where she sings "The Hanging Tree". A rebel attack on a District 5 dam blacks out the Capitol, a strike team rescues Peeta, Johanna, Enobaria and Annie, and a hijacked Peeta nearly strangles Katniss.
The film premiered at the Odeon Leicester Square in London on November 10, 2014 and opened in the United States on November 21; it grossed $755.4 million worldwide, the fifth-highest total of 2014, with the year's largest opening day and opening weekend. Reviews were generally positive about the acting, music and political subtext but criticized the pacing and the split. Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat" was nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes.
