President Coin

The rebel leader who would become a tyrant.

Alma Coin is the leader of District 13 who commands the rebellion against the Capitol. She is introduced in the third installment of the series, Mockingjay, as the president of the supposedly destroyed District 13. Coin is a calculating and authoritative figure who views Katniss Everdeen primarily as a propaganda tool—the Mockingjay—to inspire the districts to rise up. Her ultimate goal is to overthrow President Snow, but her methods reveal a willingness to sacrifice anyone, including children, to achieve power. Katniss eventually realizes that Coin is no less ruthless than Snow, and when given the chance to execute Snow, Katniss kills Coin instead.

Lore & Background

Alma Coin is the president of District 13, the underground district that survived the Capitol's destruction decades earlier and secretly rebuilt itself as a military power. In Mockingjay, she orchestrates the rebellion against President Snow, using Katniss Everdeen as the symbolic face of the revolution—the Mockingjay. Coin controls the narrative of the war, staging propaganda and even a supposed Capitol atrocity that kills Katniss's sister, Prim. After the war, Coin calls for a final Hunger Games using the children of Capitol war criminals, revealing her desire to perpetuate the very system she fought against. Katniss, recognizing Coin's ruthlessness, kills her instead of Snow.

In Their Own Story

Coin stands in the command center of District 13, her voice flat and unwavering as she outlines the next phase of the rebellion. She tells Katniss that her role is to be the Mockingjay—a symbol, not a soldier. When Katniss hesitates, Coin reminds her that the districts need a face to rally behind. Later, after the Capitol falls, Coin proposes a new Hunger Games with Capitol children as tributes. Katniss watches Coin's face, searching for a flicker of humanity, but finds only the same cold calculation that defined Snow. In that moment, Katniss knows what she must do.

Reader's Guide

Alma Coin is the president of District 13 and the supreme commander of the rebel forces. She first appears in Mockingjay, where she recruits Katniss as the Mockingjay to inspire the districts. Coin is strategic and manipulative, willing to sacrifice anyone—including Prim—to achieve victory. Her defining moment comes after the war when she proposes a final Hunger Games using Capitol children, proving she is no better than Snow. Katniss ultimately kills Coin, recognizing her as a tyrant. Coin's story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of absolute power and the ease with which revolutionaries can become oppressors.
