Brisingidae

The Brisingidae are a family of deep-sea starfish. They live in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans at abyssal depths, as well as in the Southern Ocean and around Antarctica, where they are found in somewhat shallower water. Their name comes from Brísingamen, a necklace belonging to the Norse goddess Freya that was stolen by Loki and hidden in the sea.
These starfish have a small central disc that looks like that of a brittle star (Ophiurida) and is clearly separate from the arms. The disc is roughly circular, with a rigid rim made of fused plates. The madreporite sits near the disc’s edge. The arms are long and tapering—the arm length is more than six times the disc radius—and they meet at an acute angle. A deep groove at the base allows the arms to be shed easily. Near the disc, each arm has a narrow cylindrical section that widens to hold the gonadal tissues, then tapers to a long point. On the upper (aboral) side of the arms, the plates are small, much smaller than the marginal plates, which are lined with spines. The underside of each arm has a broad ambulacral groove with a row of tube feet on each side, each foot bearing a sucker. The pedicellariae are crossed.
Brisingidae live on hard surfaces at depths ranging from 100 to 4,500 meters (300 to 14,800 feet). They feed by raising their arms vertically above the disc to filter suspended organic particles from the water. This vertical arm-raising is possible because the small aboral plates give the arms flexibility in that plane. The genus *Novodinia* is less able to raise its arms due to a different plate arrangement, while members of the related family Freyellidae have not been observed raising their arms this way.
