The firebrick starfish, *Asterodiscides truncatus*, is a five-armed starfish belonging to the family Asterodiscididae. Its range includes eastern and southern Australia, the Norfolk Ridge, and the Kermadec Islands of New Zealand.

On its upper, or aboral, surface, this species has plates arranged in a net-like pattern, with brightly colored tubercles scattered in between. Marginal plates are few and not obvious, except for a very large superomarginal plate at the tip of each arm. The tube feet end in suckers and lack spicules. The tubercles vary in both size and color, creating a pattern of red, purple, and orange across the upper surface. Each arm tip also bears a pair of especially large tubercles.

Endemic to Australia, *A. truncatus* is found along the south and east coasts, as well as the western Norfolk Ridge and the Kermadec Islands. In southern Australia, it lives in deep water, around 120 meters (400 feet) deep, on rocky habitats. In New South Wales, however, it occurs on shallow, subtidal rocky reefs.

The starfish feeds by grazing on sponges and other colorful bottom-dwelling organisms at the base of kelp forests, where its own bright colors blend in. A commensal shrimp sometimes lives among its tubercles. It has been observed releasing gametes into the water by raising its body off the seafloor on the tips of its arms. Beyond this, little is known about its biology.
