Alkaidia
Extinct Cretaceous sea stars from Texas and Morocco.
Alkaidia is an extinct genus of sea stars that inhabited the western Tethys Ocean during the Cretaceous period, specifically from the Barremian through the Cenomanian stages. The genus was first formally described in 1998, and currently contains two recognized species.
The first species, and the type species, is *Alkaidia sumralli*. Its fossils—both complete and partial—were collected in Texas, primarily from the Washita Group. Paleontologists Daniel B. Blake and Robert Reid, III described these remains in a 1998 paper. The genus name comes from Alkaid, a star in Ursa Major; the species name honors Colin Sumrall, who discovered and prepared several specimens, including the holotype. That holotype, a complete specimen (catalog number 1786TXI), was found in the Del Rio Formation at Waco Dam Quarry and is housed in the Texas Memorial Museum. Additional fragments from the same quarry and from the Paw Paw Formation were designated as paratypes.
A second species, *Alkaidia megaungula*, was described in 2020 by Timothy A. M. Ewin and Andrew S. Gale. Its fossils came from the Taba Starfish Bed in the Barremian-aged Taboulouart Formation of Morocco, and were purchased from commercial collectors. The species name, meaning "large hoof" in Greek, refers to the animal's large terminal ossicle, which resembles a hoof. The Moroccan specimens are well-preserved and include individuals from multiple growth stages, allowing researchers to reconstruct an ontogenetic series.
