Far into the future, Mars is ruled by the Society, where Reds serve as low-status laborers harvesting Helium-3. Eo and Darrow are newly-weds working in these underground colonies. Their life changes when they sneak into a restricted underground forest, leading to public whippings with Nero Augustus present. During her execution, Eo defiantly sings an illegal song protesting the Reds' enslavement before being hanged. Her death leaves Darrow grieving and leads him to illegally bury her, resulting in his own fake hanging orchestrated by his uncle Narol. This sequence reveals that Mars has actually been terraformed for centuries, a lie told to keep Reds compliant.

The narrative of Eo centers on her final moments of defiance. After being caught sneaking into the forest with Darrow, the couple faces public punishment. With Nero Augustus watching and the event broadcast to all, Eo refuses to submit silently. She sings a song that protests their enslavement, an act deemed treasonous by the Society. The ArchGovernor orders her immediate hanging. Following this, a grieving Darrow attempts to bury her illegally but is caught and hanged himself, though he survives thanks to his uncle Narol drugging him to fake death. Eo's death is not just a personal tragedy for Darrow; it is the specific event that pushes him to join the Sons of Ares and undergo physical transformation into a Gold.
