Eo
She was the spark that turned a quiet miner into a warlord.
Eo is a Red miner and the wife of Darrow on Mars. Her execution serves as the primary catalyst for the novel's events. Publicly whipped alongside Darrow for entering a restricted forest, she defies authority by singing an illegal song in front of ArchGovernor Nero Augustus during her broadcasted hanging. This act of treason ignites Darrow's desire for revenge against the Golds and drives his subsequent infiltration of their ranks.

Lore & Background
Far into the future, Mars is ruled by the Society, where Reds serve as low-status laborers harvesting Helium-3. Eo and Darrow are newly-weds working in these underground colonies. Their life changes when they sneak into a restricted underground forest, leading to public whippings with Nero Augustus present. During her execution, Eo defiantly sings an illegal song protesting the Reds' enslavement before being hanged. Her death leaves Darrow grieving and leads him to illegally bury her, resulting in his own fake hanging orchestrated by his uncle Narol. This sequence reveals that Mars has actually been terraformed for centuries, a lie told to keep Reds compliant.
In Their Own Story
The narrative of Eo centers on her final moments of defiance. After being caught sneaking into the forest with Darrow, the couple faces public punishment. With Nero Augustus watching and the event broadcast to all, Eo refuses to submit silently. She sings a song that protests their enslavement, an act deemed treasonous by the Society. The ArchGovernor orders her immediate hanging. Following this, a grieving Darrow attempts to bury her illegally but is caught and hanged himself, though he survives thanks to his uncle Narol drugging him to fake death. Eo's death is not just a personal tragedy for Darrow; it is the specific event that pushes him to join the Sons of Ares and undergo physical transformation into a Gold.
Reader's Guide
Eo appears only in the early chapters of Red Rising but her influence permeates the entire story. She is characterized as Darrow's wife whose hanging ignites his desire for revenge. Her role is strictly defined by her relationship to Darrow and her execution, which occurs after she sings an illegal song. Readers should note that her death directly leads to Darrow meeting Narol, who delivers him to the Sons of Ares. Unlike other characters, Eo does not survive the first act; her legacy exists solely through the actions she inspires in Darrow, specifically his decision to infiltrate the Society as "Darrow au Andromedus".
