Eo is a Red miner and the wife of Darrow on Mars. Her execution serves as the primary catalyst for the novel's events. Publicly whipped alongside Darrow for entering a restricted forest, she defies authority by singing an illegal song in front of ArchGovernor Nero Augustus, who then has her publicly hanged. This act of treason ignites Darrow's desire for revenge against the Golds and drives his subsequent infiltration of their ranks.

Far into the future, Mars is ruled by the Society, where Reds serve as low-status laborers harvesting Helium-3. Eo and Darrow are newly-weds working in these underground colonies. Their life changes when they sneak into a restricted underground forest, leading to public whippings with Nero Augustus present. At the whipping, Eo defiantly sings an illegal song protesting the Reds' enslavement, and Nero has her hanged. Her death leaves Darrow grieving and leads him to illegally bury her, resulting in his own fake hanging orchestrated by his uncle Narol. This sequence reveals that Mars has actually been terraformed for centuries, a lie told to keep Reds compliant.

Golden Son later reveals that Eo was pregnant when she was hanged. She is characterized as Darrow's wife whose hanging ignites his desire for revenge. Her role is strictly defined by her relationship to Darrow and her execution, which occurs after she sings an illegal song.
