The Mines
Underground, the Reds dig helium-3 for a sky they are told they cannot yet have.
The mines of Mars are the underground Red mining colonies of Pierce Brown's Red Rising. Their Reds harvest helium-3 fuel for the planet's eventual terraforming and are promised that their toil will one day let humanity live on the surface, but Mars has in truth been terraformed for centuries. Darrow, a 16-year-old helium-3 miner, comes from the mining colony of Lykos.
Lore & Background
Under torture in Morning Star, Darrow gives up the location of Lykos to Adrius. In the sequel books, Reds freed from the mines by the Rising, such as Lyria of Lagalos, are left in relocation camps, and Sefi's Obsidians seize many of Mars's helium mines from Quicksilver.
